Best Weather for Shooting Colors

Iceland-Seltun

Before starting with the blog post let me write a line about the featured image. All of you having visited Iceland and having taken a bath in the famous Blue Lagoon have been very close to this awesome place already. From the main road it is just a 15 minute ride to the south, well worth the side-step.

Seltun in Iceland

In the geothermal field of Seltun near Reykjavik sulfuric water and gases created colorful deposits, wherever you step boiling water bubbles out of the earth left and right, just the acrid smell of sulfate is disgusting. An area blue and red and yellow and green, looking and smelling like the entrance to Hades. If not taking care you’ll go right down, better stick to the marked path!

You want to know how it smells? Lighten a match and smell the moment it starts to catch fire. That by ten thousand might get you closer to the experience. Then let’s add some sound to make it the full experience:

Sounds like being next to a cooking pot in the kitchen, but no, the sound was recorded in the geothermal field with all the bubbling hot pots around.

Best Weather for Color Photography

Other than you might think blue sky and sun are not our best partners in color photography. Instead you should hope for an overcast day. Not only the contrast will be significantly lower but also the colors will pop in your image! Give it a try. Next overcast or slightly foggy day grab your camera and head out for photographing some colors.

Shooting fall colored trees sometimes very late evening light can help warming up your subject. Or even better, the last beams of light pushing through a gap in the clouds right before an upcoming thunderstorm will give you an intense warm lighting. But be aware, it causes a significant color shift to the reds, therefore this kind of light works best with a warm tone subject!

Photographing Colors

Colors are very sensitive to perfect exposure. Shooting colors too dark will make them show up dull and poor in the picture. Exposing too bright will wash them out very quickly. So take care to get your exposure right in camera already and make your colors glow.

Later in post processing do not forget to correct the white balance since it will totally change the look and feel of your color photograph. Personally I am a big fan of adding some color pop if necessary with working in the lab mode of photoshop (a quick tutorial you can find in this earlier post here). But keep it subtle!

We love to believe in the value of change.

Destruction gives place to new.

New often mistaken for better.

Nature, monuments, traditions – nothing sacred.

No questions. No balance.

Emotions and senses vanish.

Lost vocabulary: dignity and respect.

Priceless universal goods traded for profit.

Temptations plentiful.

Consequences ignored.

Our grandchildren will hold us responsible.

Acting today impacts the future.

We shall better preserve.

We shall better take care.

Irreversible destruction is everlasting.
